New Corona Virus In Wuhan City China

Pneumonia cases reported with novel Coronavirus

Chinese authorities have detected a cluster of Novel Coronavirus 2019-nCoV infections in Wuhan City China. Patients developed Viral Pneumonia and Respiratory distress in some cases.

Initially, Exposure to the seafood market in the city has been reported as a common thread in most cases. The market has been closed as per the Chinese authorities on 1 January 2020. Some samples from the Seafood market have tested positive for this novel Corona Virus. Around four deaths have been reported.

Symptoms of Coronavirus Infection
  •  Fever
  •  Breathlessness
  •  Cough
  •  Chest pain
  •  Generalized Weakness and Fatigue
  • Some patients can have Haemoptysis. (Sputum with Blood)
Cases with travel history to the city need to be screened. Few cities in Europe have direct flights to the city of Wuhan. Chinese Lunar new year celebrations can increase the movement of people in the country. Many people from abroad may visit the Chinese city. This can increase the spread of infections.

The mysterious respiratory virus that has killed at least four people can spread between humans. This can lead to an increase in the incidence of respiratory infection. There are reports that the Medical staff has been infected. Previously it was thought that the transmission is from animals to humans. But if the transmission is confirmed from humans to humans then the spread could be faster leading to an epidemic.

There are many strains of Coronavirus. Other strains of Coronaviruses are believed to cause a significant percentage of common colds in human adults and children. These tend to be less virulent.

How does the Corona Virus spread?
Viruses can spread from human contact with animals. If a person comes in contact with an infected person's secretions then he or she can get infected. Droplet infections after sneezing or coughing can spread the infection from one person to another.
Coronavirus is common in animals. Rarely they can be zoonotic, meaning they can spread from animals to humans. Human Coronavirus produced an epidemic in 2003-2004. This epidemic was more dangerous because it caused both upper as well as lower respiratory tract infections. This virus was called SARS(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). First identified in Guangdong province China it spread throughout Southeast Asia. Death rate with SARS ranged from 5-50% of cases.SARS produces acute respiratory distress which needs hospitalization. More than 10,000 people were infected by this strain of Coronavirus in 2003-2004. Approximately 8-10% of the infected patients died.

Prevention is better than cure. Wearing facemask to prevent droplet infections in public spaces is recommended. Avoiding travel to infected areas is also very much recommended.

Washing hands after coming in contact with an infected person are useful. One should be very careful in public areas like traveling on trains, metros, and buses. Handwashing after traveling from public transport is also useful.
Further investigations are being done to isolate the organism. Viral PCR studies of throat secretions can isolate the organism. If you have a fever and respiratory tract infection then it is better to contact your doctor.
The treatment is symptomatic. Hydration should be maintained properly. One must drink plenty of water and liquids. Antipyretics like paracetamol can be used for symptomatic relief. Antihistamines can be helpful to relieve symptoms like running of nose and sneezing. Antiviral's recommendations are awaited.
Nebulization can be helpful to reduce breathlessness. Fresh guidelines need to be issued by the WHO (World Health Organisation) quickly. Patients with acute respiratory distress may need ventilatory support.

How to control Hypertension : 7 Easy Ways

How to Control Hypertension

  Silent Killer

Hypertension is one of the commonest lifestyle disorders.

It is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. It is estimated that it increases the risk of Heart attacks by at least two-fold. Heart attacks can be major resulting in acute Myocardial infarctions or minor in others resulting in angina or recurrent chest pains.

Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to cerebrovascular events as well like intracerebral hemorrhages and infarcts. Other complications like Kidney failure and peripheral vascular diseases can occur. It is usually associated with diabetes and dyslipidemia. However, some patients having very high blood pressure can have giddiness and headache.

Why is it Dangerous?

Hypertension is more dangerous than other diseases because in most cases it does not produce any symptoms. Patients usually seek medical advice because they have pain or fever or some other symptoms.

Patients do not go to doctors because they think they have no problem. So in many cases, High blood pressure remains undetected or silent. Meantime the high blood pressure keeps on damaging the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes and other organs in the body. That's the reason why it is known as the Silent Killer.

Hypertension is a Global Disease

Hypertension is a global disease but its incidence varies from country to country. Within a country also it differs in various subpopulations. Urban areas have more prevalence of hypertension.

With increasing age incidence of hypertension increases.

Obesity is also associated with an increased incidence of hypertension. In the United States, Incidence of Obesity is increasing. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that, for 2015-2016 in the Us.,39.8%of adults aged 20 and over were obese/overweight. In the rest of the world also the incidence of obesity is increasing. Particularly the increasing incidence of childhood obesity is worrisome.

What can be done to check this menace?

There are a lot of old and new medicines for controlling hypertension. Normal blood pressure is 120/80.

However, blood pressure up to 140/90 is also considered as the upper limit of normal. Blood Pressure above 180/100 is very high and such patients need to be admitted in an emergency to control blood pressure.

Non-Pharmacological intervention

In many cases High blood pressure can be reduced by additional measure ;

1-  Reducing Salt Intake.
2-  Reducing Alcohol Intake
3-  Reduction of weight
4-  Cessation of Smoking
5-  Increasing Physical activities
6-  Practising Mindfulness and relaxation techniques
7-  Reducing Stress

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

All people suffering from hypertension should take medicines as prescribed by their doctors or physicians. Along with they can do mindfulness to reduce stress and blood pressure. Mindfulness reduces sympathetic overdrive and calms the mind. Many patients are having stress which can be reduced by simple techniques. Long term medicine consumption can have side effects.

Mindfulness is safer and cheaper. It can be tried along with medicines. However, at no stage patients should stop their medications without their doctor's advice.

Mindfulness is a cheaper and safer addition to the treatment of hypertension. Mindfulness can be practiced for 10 to 15 minutes once or twice a day. It has hardly any side effects. Already the cost of healthcare is increasing rapidly. Cost of Insurance and Tertiary care is putting a severe financial burden on families. Why not try this method?

Different forms of Mindfulness

Different forms of mindfulness

Many people believe that they have to learn how to do mindfulness. Some people are very restless and can’t sit in one place. They find it difficult to practice mindfulness. Most people do not have an expert to teach them mindfulness.

However, everyone has a few hobbies. Few people like to be in nature while others like painting or dancing. These are some of the examples of what people like to do. You may be having a different liking or hobby. Every individual is different. Everyone's likes and dislikes are different. Two brothers or sisters brought up by the same parents can have widely different opinions and hobbies.

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment without being judgmental. When you do what you like and get engrossed in the process you tend to achieve a mindful state.

One of my relatives loves gardening. He gets engrossed in the process so much that he forgets the world. He focuses on the present moment and forgets his worries and tensions. He can do that for one to two hours at a stretch. He cuts the extra branches of the plants and waters them. He clears the garbage and fallen leaves. He says it clears his mind and he feels relaxed after the work. That's a type of mindfulness. He may not know that it is a type of mindfulness in which he focuses on the present moment. The output is blooming flowers in his garden. Even more important and fruitful output is a more relaxed and productive person. This is just one example. You may like music, dancing, singing, painting or trekking. When you get engrossed in the work you attain a mindful state with its benefits as a byproduct.

Billionaire Bill Gates once told the media that he does dishwashing after dinner. Why should a super-rich technology guy do such a mundane nontechnical work? He can easily hire someone to do the work for him. There are emotional benefits to the work. A person can enter into the mindful state while doing such a simple chore. Mindfulness state is a creative and peaceful space. Even the richest man on earth needs that space to be creative and relaxed after a day's work.

Busy professionals may laugh at such work but recent research has indicated that doing such work can make the person more relaxed and inspired after a busy day.

Conclusion-: If you get a chance to learn how to practice mindfulness then it is good. Even otherwise you may be doing mindfulness already. Learn to develop a hobby or passion for your liking. Try to be present during the simple task that you choose to do as a hobby. Disconnect from the past and be present. Focus on the work and enjoy the process. The benefits of mindfulness are there for everyone to reap.
